Calcutta High Court
Calcutta High Court Case Status : The Calcutta High Court is one of the three High Courts of India, established in Presidency Town by letters patent decided by Queen Victoria, dated June 26, 1862, and is the oldest High Court in India. It was established as a court at Fort William on July 1, 1862, under the High Court Act 1861, previously established by the Supreme Court of Judiciary at Fort William. Walter Long Bozzi Granville designed the building structure.
Even though the city’s name officially changed from Calcutta to Calcutta in 2001, the Court retained the old name as an institution. The bill to rename the Calcutta High Court was passed by the Union Cabinet on July 5, 2016, along with the renaming of its other two counterparts in Chennai and Mumbai, thus still retaining the name—the former name of Superior Court.
